Methods of Constipation relief
Changes in Diet and Lifestyle
In many cases, simple changes to diet and lifestyle can help treat constipation. However, it may take a few days or weeks until your symptoms improve. Try to drink plenty of fluids, and avoid alcohol and increase fibre in your diet.
Good sources of fibre include:
Whole grains , such as whole wheat bread and pasta, oatmeal, and bran flake cereals
Legumes , such as lentils, black beans, kidney beans, soybeans, and chickpeas
Fruits , such as berries, apples with the skin on, oranges, and pears
Vegetables , such as carrots, broccoli, green peas, and collard greens
Nuts , such as almonds, peanuts, and pecans
Exercise
A daily walk or run can also help you to defecate more regularly.
Additionally, try to keep to a regular time and place when using the toilet and give yourself plenty of time.
Don’t delay using the bathroom if you feel the urge to empty your bowels.
Laxatives
Laxatives are a type of medicine that can help you empty your bowels. There are several different types of laxatives. Laxatives act at different speeds, depending on active ingredient (mode of action) and administration form. Examples of different types of laxative groups are bulk-forming laxatives, osmotic laxatives, stimulant laxatives and stool softener laxatives. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor if diet and lifestyle changes are not helping. They might be able to suggest a suitable laxative.
